Mimi, Money and Me is a wide-ranging, insightful financial guidebook written in simple, easy-to-understand English.  It is a practical, no-nonsense introduction to the realities associated with 101 money-related myths, mistakes, misunderstandings, and misconceptions. The book is instructive, entertaining and light-hearted, and is peppered with something called “Mimi-isms”—life and money rules to live by—which the author learned from her Mother, Mimi.  Guided by Mimi’s teachings and bothered by the realization that so many others have not had the benefit of a parent, teacher or even a friend who could help them navigate around life’s financial roadblocks, Patricia Davis has written a primer on money management that takes some of the mystery out of many of the financial speed bumps you might encounter.  It offers savvy advice about planning ahead (budgeting and estate planning), navigating the world of credit/debt, real estate, money and relationships, understanding your own financial value system, banking, and insurance. Mimi, Money and Me is a book from which individuals of any age can learn and is designed to guide you successfully along your road to “financial freedom.”  If the lessons presented here are indeed learned, Davis assures that you will feel more comfortable that you have learned the “rules of the road” as they relate to the money game.  You will feel you can play the game and win!  Using real-life stories for emphasis and explaining legal obligations with clarity, Mimi, Money and Me gives you the tools needed to take charge of your financial life.  Ignore them at your financial peril.  It is straight-forward; easily understood; and loaded with information.  There are no graphs; there are no charts.  Plain and simple, it is money management concepts explained in 101 easy-to-swallow bites. Mimi, Money and Me is written by a highly trained, experienced author who has spent many years preparing herself for and perfecting her trade.  Patricia Davis has a BS in mathematics and statistics from Howard University; an MBA from Stanford University; an MS in Personal Financial Planning from Golden Gate University; and has graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown University.  All of her degrees were with high honors.  She has spent over 30 years in executive corporate finance positions in several Fortune 100 companies and as a financial educator/counselor, and is a former White House Fellow.  Most recently, she was appointed as one of two Maryland state representatives to the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, an Internal Revenue Service citizens advocacy group that focuses on improving IRS responsiveness to taxpayer needs.  In the Fall of 2010, she received Golden Gate University Community Service Award in acknowledgement of her work in helping to provide financial literacy to under-served populations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_message color=”alert-info”]

Give the gift of financial power, in the form of a good book

By Michelle Singletary Mimi, Money and Me: 101 Realities About Money Daddy Never Taught Me but Mama Always Knew,” by Patricia A. Davis (Davis Financial Services, $19.99). This self-published book is a sweet testimony to the author’s mother, Beatrice Staunton, who had to raise the last three of her five children alone after her husband died in 1960. I met Staunton and daughter Patricia when they came to a reception I gave nine years ago for my annual Penny Pincher of the Year contest. Davis channels her mother’s common-sense approach about money by putting together a basic book that includes solid tips on budgeting, banking, credit, insurance and estate planning.
